Sources and method

Where every number comes from, how we check it, and how to report a mistake.

Every page with a number has its sources at the bottom, with the date we checked them. The rules we follow:

  • Only sources you can cite: veterinary guidelines (WSAVA, ESCCAP, AAHA, AVMA), veterinary manuals (Merck), animal welfare charities (ASPCA, PDSA, RSPCA, International Cat Care), peer-reviewed studies, official breed standards (FCI).
  • Before using a page, we read its footer: some sites forbid rewriting their content with artificial intelligence. We don’t use them (for example the VCA “know-your-pet” pages).
  • Our own words: from the sources we take facts and numbers, never sentences.
  • No number without a source. If a source can’t be read, its number doesn’t go on the site.
  • Never a diagnosis, a dose or a product name. Emergency tools never say “it’s nothing”: they say who to call.
  • Mistakes: write to me and I fix them within 48 hours.

Photos

The animal photos come from Pexels (Pexels license: free to use, attribution not required, but we credit them anyway) and from Wikimedia Commons (public domain, CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA). Below, photo by photo: the animal, the author (linked to the original page) and the license. The changes are ours: we remove the background and crop the animal. The crops of CC BY-SA photos can be reused under the same license as the original photo.
